Argentina's 'Falklands Olympics'
advert sparks row
---------------------------------
Filmed in dreamy early
morning light this advert aired in Argentine TV. Its about an athlete’s nostalgia Fernando Zilberberg
is a well known Argentine Hockey player here he is running in Port
Stanley. He does his exercises outside
the Globe Tavern. With no one around he uses the granite steps of the British First
World War memorial before dashing past the Penguin News. Those on the island are not sure when the
filming took place. The athlete says it
took place in secret. The advert has angered
the islanders, not least because of its message in the run up to the London Olympics;
the slogan here is to Compete in English Soil, We Train on Argentine Soil. This nationalistic sentiment is in line with
recent comments from Argentine President Kristine Fernandez de Kirchner. She has used the 30 years anniversary of the
Falklands war to accuse Britain on Colonialism.
She wants her counties flag to fly above the islands known to Argentines
as the Malvinas. But amongst some
Argentines the propaganda and the video has gone down well.
I think its right, we
are defending something that is ours, with the weapons we have, we know we are
inferior to the big powers and we have to use what we have in reach to get
something done.
It’s
fabulous artistically and as an Argentine that spirit comes out of you, yes its Argentine soil, but
I don’t understand the concrete reason, the intelligent political reason its
just to look for a fight.
But
the islanders are not amused, they say it was made without their permission in
a cheap and underhand way as if, said one man they don’t exist.

y seis abstenciones. Después la expropiación se celebración tanto como afuera
