For this audience there is plenty to smile about. Enthusiastic new comedians are managing to make them laugh and the crowd hasn’t paid a penny or a dirham for the privilege.  Small scale standup comedy nights are pretty new here in Dubai and beside the bar hosting it, nobody here is making any money.

The comedy scene here is relatively nascent and there are quite a few talented performers here but not all of them necessarily get the opportunities.  The idea that comedy can actually sustain you through your rent payments, and through your credit card, your car payments, and get you food and all the rest of it I don’t see that happening for the foreseeable future .

Most of the comedians are expats living in the UAE but for local emirates like Qassab it’s a chance to get involved in something not too common in his culture.

Going to University or even High School we get more exposure in the western comedy, which is stand up comedy started there, then we start here, somehow, then of course we have the ex-pats coming here, bringing their culture to it but as we grow bigger, for sure there will be more comedian and I would love to see more locals dressed up like this, cracking jokes about their social problems, their own problems or even, you know the county in general.

Wonho is proof that you can make a living and a reputation from comedy in the region.  He performs mainly in Arabic, despite his Asian heritage and he made his name not through comedy clubs but by uploading his act onto the internet.

I wouldn’t have a career if it wasn’t for social media, let’s put it that way.  It shows how people are thirsty for, any kind of material that is good, and I think for any up and coming comic create a show, it’s easy, it’s inexpensive, free to use, you know put your stuff out there , let people watch and when you achieve a certain level of success on social media companies will be more  willing to give you money, sponsor your events , to book your venues, to market your event and have you perform live in front of people, and the experience that I have had, it’s always a catch 22 but once you get it right then, I think you are all set.

So with technology making it easier for this regions new comics to reach a wider audience perhaps more of them, will be soon will be laughing to all the way to the bank

Whatever you want to call it, at one stage or another, every one of us aspires to get there. It's when we do our best work, achieve our peak performance. How can you do it reliably? You will often hear people talk about the zone in the context of intellectual or athletic pursuits, but rarely both. My experience is that are three broad rules that you have to understand in order to get in the zone: There's no zone for new activities. Why? Getting in the zone requires activating the subconscious part of the brain. The very nature of it requires you not to be trying, not consciously thinking about what it is you're doing.  You have got to put in the ten thousand hours of practice or have formed the necessary myelin pathways. The Zone requires your subconscious: Flow only works when the subconscious takes over from the conscious mind. Being practiced at what you do is necessary, but it's not sufficient. This is where other techniques start to kick in – meditation; visualization for example. The Zone is emotional. Some emotions will help you find flow; others will scare it off. Being passionate about the topic and a deep, almost-religious conviction in what they are talking about seem to be the common ingredients of those who find flow. Once you understand these principles, there are a range of tactics that can help: Find the right environment.  Music seems to help immensely, particularly in the context of activating those emotions Exercising both your body and your mind Find your best time of day.  And, then of course, there are the days where you're not getting into the zone no matter what time it is, how many coffees you drink or what music you're listening to. And that's OK. If you're just not feeling it, cut yourself some slack. I have found that it's better to listen to your body on days like these. They are the highest spending visitors that we have, yet we don’t get as many as we would like.  We get about 150,000 per year and that does not compare to the numbers that go to France or Germany.  One of the barriers is that, obviously Chinese visitors need a visa to come to Britain and this is a separate visa that they need for the whole of Europe so we need to work that bit harder to get over to the Chinese visitors that it is worth  it to spend time, additional energy to get a visa to visit Britain.

But the easing of visa rules for Chinese tourists is not an open and shut case for the government torn between those that believe it would damage security and those that believe there is a strong economic argument to encourage tourists from china.  However, British business knows that there are plenty of other countries in the world to sell luxury products to the nouveau riche and of we want them to buy British we have to lay out the welcome mat.
