Eurozone leaders have been on a long running charm offensive with China to persuade them to bolster their bailout funds.  In Mexico they will be pressing this suit again but they face a tough diplomatic challenge.  China is angry at how European states have treated it since the last time it helped to avert a financial disaster.

China, Russia, Brazil, India all contributed to the IMF after the 2008 financial crisis and they were promised in return yet more power and influence in the IMF.  That deal still hasn’t been delivered on as the Europeans have been particularly slow to give up their seats to let that happen.

Euro zone countries are building up a firewall to prevent the debt crisis in Greece spreading to countries like Italy and Spain.  A fighting fund to counter any runs on the markets against their government bonds.  The current fund the European Financial Stability Facility or E.F.S.F contains 410bn.  In July there will be a permanent firewall the European Stability Mechanism or E.S.M that will have 500bn in it. Chinese leaders have told the Europeans to build the wall higher.

To a certain extent it is a stalling tactic saying to Europe you help yourself first and we will then come in and support you.

The idea that China, the so called Red Knight can come riding to Europse rescue is helping to calm fears in international financial markets, staving off a run on Eurozone Government bonds and even if China isn’t writing cheques right now the idea that it will eventually step in, is helping to reassure the markets and that buys Eurozone Government more time.
