IMF urges deeper euro integration

---------------------------------

Euro zone finance ministers had plenty to think about with Greece wanting to renegotiate its bail-out terms and Spain putting some hard numbers on the black hole in the banking system, an important element in its negotiations for Euro zone financial support.  They also had a visitor, the IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde delivering the agencies report card on the Euro zone economies.  Her key message was a striking agenda far reaching reform.

We are seeing additional tension and acute stress applying to both banks and sovereigns in the Euro area. With that in mind the IMF believes that a full determined and forceful move to a full complete monetary union should be reaffirmed in order to restore faith in the system.

Her proposals include long term elements: deeper integration of the governments finances and borrowing; a banking union; and reforms to improve competitiveness and she wants more immediate action including steps from the European Central Bank, she said it should consider resuming  its proposal of buying government debt in the financial markets.  These proposals of a more integrated Euro zone are in line with many economists ideas of tacking the crisis but they are politically difficult for many countries as finance ministers continue to discussion in Luxembourg there is a challenging agenda for the forthcoming summit starting in Rome starting today, when the Prime Minister Mario Monti meets the French and Spanish leaders as well as the key players in it all the German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
